I'm John's wife

2025

Performance, 7 min

I'm John's wife is a performance that stages a deliberately ambiguous celebration. The audience is invited to serve themselves slices of cake placed directly on the body of one of the performers. In doing so, they become both witnesses and participants in a gesture that blurs the codes of conviviality. By subtly subverting the conventions that usually structure moments of sharing, the work explores how proximity can quickly become uncomfortable. The body becomes a site of exposure and interaction, where touch, gaze, and participation are entangled.

Beyond its playful dimension, the performance addresses themes of desire, betrayal, and the reconstruction of identity following a romantic breakup. It stages the aftermath of relational instability through the physical proximity of the two performers, who—through their attire—seem to inhabit entirely incompatible rhythms of life. By reworking the familiar format of celebration, the performance opens a space where social rituals are slightly displaced, revealing the fragile and sometimes contradictory dynamics that shape intimacy.
